Go in, do the business and get out - the lessons of the Afghan wars

Article Abstract:

There are many challenges associated with taking military action in Afghanistan and establishing a new political regime there. Nato embraces Eastern partners in biggest step for half a century

Article Abstract:

Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary have been invited to join the Nato military alliance in 1999. This move is regarded as a watershed in the history of Nato, increasing its territory by 14%. By 1999, Nato member countries will have a population of 60 million and armed forces of 382,000. Nato expansion has been strongly criticized by Russia, which has stated its belief that Nato is making a very misguided move. There has been bitter conflict among Nato members about which countries should be invited to join.

A world redrawn in the decade following fall of the Berlin Wall

Article Abstract:

The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 has been the driving force behind the enlargement of Nato, which has now finally been agreed. However, the enlargement process has been extremely sensitive, and Nato has had to address very difficult issues. These include its own restructuring to reflect the changing world order and how to deal with eastern European countries which could not or did not want to join Nato. It has proved impossible to separate geopolitical and strategic issues from the domestic politics of the main countries involved in the enlargement process.
