Going off the rails, and other stories
Article Abstract:
Author Susan Minot had to rewrite the draft of her book before she forgot it after it was stolen from her car. A S Byatt lost her working notebook for 'Possession' when her bag was taken. Garrison Keillor lost two stories at Portland Station. T E Lawrence lost six and a half of his 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom' on a train and Lisa St Aubin de Teran rescued her work from the railway tracks after a thief tried to jump out of the window with it. All feel devastated at the loss and doubt their rewriting is as good.

What George did next
Article Abstract:
Novelist Denise Danks has for many years felt a close affinity with Enid Blyton's 'Famous Five' character George, a tomboy who did not fit in. She has revived all the 'Famous Five' characters in her novels, but has focused particularly on George. She is attracted to George because she seems amoral and makes mistakes. She is also fascinated with the implications of technology and with the way criminals are able to get round systems and exploit loopholes.

Menace, molestation and murder
Article Abstract:
Writers frequently make reference to their backgrounds, according to novelist Joyce Carol Oates. She is fascinated with how people survive the problems they encounter, and believes that it is possible to restore shattered lives. She feels that her writing mainly deals with the aftermath of violence, rather than with violence itself. She is particularly interested in women and children who are the victims of violence.
