Going to market forces the issue

Article Abstract:

The public sector now uses market research, marketing and targeting to provide the services the public wants. Grant-maintained schools, City Technology Colleges, leisure centres and sports centres have advertised on local radio and professional PR agencies are being used. The Association of Direct Labour Organisations (ADLO) runs courses to help leisure centre managers maximise turnover and ensure that contracts are won in-house. The Audit Commission considers cross-boundary tendering to be illegal since Oct 1990 and activities permitted under the Local Authorities (Goods and Services) Act 1970 and the Local Government Act 1972 have to be re-investigated.

Mergers of the mighty may doom self-regulation

Article Abstract:

The future of self-regulation in the UK accountancy profession could be called into question by mergers between leading accounting firms, according to the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). The department of trade and industry could respond by establishing a new statutory regulatory body. Existing accountancy institutes are likely to become weaker, but the CIMA denies that this will inevitably lead to mergers. Indeed, it is seeking to compete more aggressively with the other institutions, especially the Chartered Institute of Public Finance.

Don't let your cash stay with brokers

Article Abstract:

Retaining large amounts of money in stockbrokers' cash-management accounts may be unwise, as very few brokers pay attractive rates of interest. It is important to consider a range of factors when selecting a broker, including rates paid on balances and the ease of withdrawing cash.
