Good things can be bad

Article Abstract:

Health foods, supplements and vitamins have become extremely popular in the UK since the 1970s. Some of these products can have a positive effect on health, but it is becoming increasingly recognized that many can be toxic in large or even moderate quantities. Research indicates that taking more than 500mg a day of vitamin C, a dose quite often recommended for adults, can boost the levels of chemicals in the blood which show that DNA is being damaged. Taking large quantities of beta-carotine, the main source of vitamin A, has been linked with a raised risk of cancer.

The waking nightmare

Article Abstract:

The increasing sophistication of anaesthesia has led to a rise in the number of cases in the UK in which patients are not fully anaesthetized during their operation. Some remain conscious of what is happening but do not feel any pain, while others are both conscious and in pain. The main problem for both anaesthetists and patients is that there is no way of monitoring awareness. Patients who have suffered this experience are often severely traumatized.
