The BBC's plans to develop services of distinction in their document 'Extending Choice' are seen as ending television 'soaps' but also threaten Radio 1. Although it is popular it consists of disc jockey shows, which are excluded in the plans as services similar to those available in the commercial marketplace are low priority. Record producer Pete Waterman instigated a Save Radio 1 campaign which includes a job description for intelligent disc jockeys.
