Gunman, IRA boss - and the new face of Ulster?

Article Abstract:

There are now good prospects for a united Ireland, according to Joe Cahill, a former IRA gunman who is still a significant figure in Sinn Fein. He is now 78, but is standing for election to the new Northern Ireland assembly. He believes that Sinn Fein can succeed in this phase of the struggle. He feels sure that all those who have died as a result of their belief in a united Ireland would be in favour of recent developments. His views are opposed by Patricia Campbell, who comes from an RUC family and feels that Unionism should no longer be regarded as an Orange institution.

Information on terrorist actions remains 'fuzzy.' (UK intelligence services lack information on the IRA)

Article Abstract:

MI5 joined the Special Branch in Oct 1992 in UK intelligence work regarding IRA activities. Scotland Yard's Anti-Terrorist Branch and the 42 provincial police forces are also involved. The national co-ordinator is Commander David Tucker of the Anti-Terrorist Branch. At least 30 IRA activists are known to be in Britain but their means of travelling to and from Ireland are unknown. Ministers are concerned about the effectiveness of the intelligence services. Legislation is expected to permit MPs (Members of Parliament) to supervise MI5.

Dedicated terrorist who killed 'in order to exist.' (IRA gunman Paul 'Dingus' Magee)

Article Abstract:

Paul 'Dingus' Magee, 45, had been an IRA terrorist for over 20 years when he shot two police officers, Constable Sandy Kelly and Special Constable Glenn Goodman in North Yorkshire, England, in June 1992. He was on the run while facing extradition from Dublin to Belfast. Magee and Michael O'Brien, 28, were caught four days later. They may have been planning a close-quarter assassination, as they had two handguns and a sawn-off Kalashnikov semi-automatic rifle, or they may have been visiting an arms cache.
