Guns get into the Maze because it's an extraordinary kind of jail

Article Abstract:

Prisoners in jails in Northern Ireland have a wide-reaching support system, and it is therefore possible for them to smuggle in large volumes of money and goods. This is the main reason why it was possible for two guns to be smuggled into the Maze prison, regarded as the most secure penal institution in the UK. These guns were used to assassinate Billy Wright, a self-publicist who had become a key object of hatred among republicans. This incident reflects that power wielded by paramilitary organizations over prison management in Northern Ireland.
