Hague on warpath as Tories rally for fightback

Article Abstract:

It is no longer appropriate to be making excuses, according to UK Conservative party leader William Hague. The party must achieve more with less money and must take a more aggressive stance. It was right to spend time reviewing the party's internal organization, but it is now time to begin communicating directly with ordinary people. He hopes to appoint more women to the Shadow Cabinet in the future, but needs more women MPs if he is to do this. He is creating a network for professional young women, aiming to encourage Conservative women to stand for Parliament.

Tories say the unthinkable

Article Abstract:

UK prime minister John Major should resign as leader of the Conservative party quickly if the party loses the forthcoming general election, according to former Conservative minister Edwina Currie. Similar views have been expressed by John Biffen, also a former minister. He believes that the Conservative party could face a humiliating defeat, with all leading contenders losing their seats. Major has emphasised his firm commitment to fighting extremely hard to win the general election.

A Tory offensive ...

Article Abstract:

Brian Mawhinney, new chairman of the Conservative party, has gained a reputation for being extremely tough. He has already proved to be much more effective than his predecessor, Jeremy Hanley, in attacking the Labour party, and is seen as being ambitious and difficult to work with. His supporters believe that he will cause the Labour party many difficulties.
