Hague's great opportunity: dump the peers and embrace democracy
Article Abstract:
It is becoming increasingly clear that UK Conservative party leader William Hague has a choice in relation to reform of the House of Lords. He can yield to pressure from those who do not wish to see hereditary peers lose their right to vote, thus leaving himself vulnerable to extensive criticism, or he can place the Labour government in a difficult position by producing coherent proposals of his own for House of Lords reform. The second approach would allow him to make a contribution in the interests of the Conservative party to the character and make-up of a democratic second chamber.
