Happy birthday, Will!

Article Abstract:

William Shakespeare continues to be a very strong cultural icon in the UK. However, some observers believe that the fact that he became so strongly embedded in the national consciousness was a rather random development, not particularly connected with his abilities. In the mid-18th century, when he came to be adopted as the national poet, there were no other strong contenders for this position. He benefited from the fact that little was known about him, thus allowing much to be imposed on him.

A blue rinse for the language

Article Abstract:

John Ashbery regards himself as a very modern poet. He feels that his poetry is hard to understand, but emphasizes that he merely writes in the only way he can. He is very attracted to the power of music, and believes that music is more effective than words. He has always felt that he is a somewhat frustrated composer who is seeking to do with words what musicians can do with notes.
