Having faith in freedom

Article Abstract:

The decision by Muslim parents in Batley, England, to withdraw their children from religious education lessons could have repercussions across the UK. Local education authorities have attempted to produce religious education syllabuses which reflect the Christian basis of religious traditions in the UK but which also take into account the other main religions practiced in the country. It may now be time to allow local education authorities to move away from a predominantly Christian approach, establishing syllabuses which better reflect the religious education needs of local children.

We live in freedom - but we're afraid to go out

Article Abstract:

Mai Truong and her husband Huan Cong Dang still consider themselves Vietnamese refugees after more than 12 years in England. They have lived on the North Peckham housing estate in London for 12 years. There were 2, 000 of their compatriots there but in 1993 there are less than 400. Social agencies do not help them and they fear racist abuse. Mai studies for a diploma in youth and community work and gives English lessons. Huan works at the Southwark Vietnamese Refugee Association centre.
