The classics mangled by the studio janitor

Article Abstract:

It has been common throughout the history of the cinema for film directors to be in conflict with film producers. In many cases, this has led to films being significantly altered. There have been many directors who have had great vision which has not been understood by producers or by the general public, and some films have not been acknowledged as influential until many years later. Some directors have become as famous for the films they never succeeded in making as for the films they actually made.

You said you wanted a revolution...

Article Abstract:

The French cinema did not only make films about the revolutionary activity that took place in May 1968, but was also part of events. French filmmakers adopted a radical stance in Feb 1968 following the authoritarian handling by the Minister of Culture of Henri Langlois, who had been dismissed as director of the Cinematheque Francaise. The Cannes film festival was halted on May 20, 1968, as an expression of sympathy with the demonstrators, and filmmakers were actively involved in recording events.
