High-tech plans laid low by economic ills
Article Abstract:
The space experts that used to work at the space settlement at Kaliningrad were highly respected and highly paid but their salaries are now less than that of a part-time cleaner. The politicians are in the middle of a row over the remains of the programme, Kazakhstan considering it has special claims in view of the Baikonur launch centre being within its territory. The scientists, management and even the cosmonauts have seen their prestige vanish although international cooperation might improve matters in due course.

A rotten, decaying nation
Article Abstract:
Poorer Russians would be affected by a currency devaluation, but many Russians have already survived a long time with no wages. A news item recorded the plight of a potato thief who was whipped with nettles by owners of small plots who needed their potatoes to survive during the winter. Russians joke about the Mafia and other aspects of Russian life, but they also despair when they cannot afford to buy food. Gas explosions are common since people who cannot pay often make illegal connections to the gas supply.

Siberian 'Lady' still youthful after 2,400 years
Article Abstract:
Scientists at the Moscow Centre for Biological Structures are working to make 'The Lady,' the 2,400-year-old body of a Siberian woman found perfectly preserved in a block of ice, ready for display. Removing the body from ice caused the skin to darken, making tattoos of deer and snow leapards hard to see, but scientists hope to return the skin to its original colour. The woman's grave, dug in around 400BC, had remained undisturbed by robbers because it was under a later grave.
