Hitting the big time
Article Abstract:
A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking has sold 5.5 million copies throughout the world since its publication in 1988 and has now been made into a film by director Errol Morris. This video portrait of Hawking and his work was assisted at the setting-up stage by Stephen Spielberg's company Amblin. The book has been translated into 22 languages and topped the Sunday Times bestseller list for 18 months. It has been said that in spite of the numbers sold, few have read it and fewer still have understood it, and the video adds nothing new. One of the main attractions has been Hawking's achieving so much intellectual power in spite of such a dreadful physical handicap.

Shock tactics
Article Abstract:
During Sandra Bernhard's one woman show Giving Till It Hurts she divides the audience into straight, gay and bi, she herself being bisexual and supposedly the lover of Madonna. In her previous show Without You I'm Nothing she would select a victim in the audience and criticise their appearance, voice, partner and everything else until everyone was thoroughly embarrassed. In spite of this her shows attract big audiences. All of her tactics involve shocking the audience and the more outrageous the better.

Shooting in the city of angels: Hollywood invented LA instead of filming it
Article Abstract:
Lawrence Kasdan's film 'Grand Canyon' opened in the United Kingdom on May 1 1992 as an attempt to portray racial tensions with the increasing desperation and violence of the black and the poor. Although Los Angeles is the capital of cinema, few films portray the city's problems and multicultural life truthfully. The population of California was 76% white 12 years ago but 57% white in 1992. Communities are segregated and it is difficult for Hollywood people to experience black culture.
