Homeowners, you've never had it so bad

Article Abstract:

Moves by the UK government to reduce assistance for mortgage borrowers could have a particular negative impact on certain categories of people, such as the self-employed and those working on a short-term contract. The government now plans that people who take out a new home loan after Oct 1995 and later become unemployed will not receive Income Support for their mortgage interest payments for the first nine months. Private insurance is supposed to cover people if they find themselves in this situation, but there is concern that many people will not be eligible for insurance.

Just what has Cedric Brown started?

Article Abstract:

The recent British Gas annual general meeting, at which small shareholders clashed with institutional shareholders, reflects the trend towards smaller shareholders demanding a greater role in the running of companies. They now have much higher expectations about the governance and accountability of companies, and are particularly opposed to the very high salary levels which directors have become accustomed to receiving. Latest discussions on this issue are focusing on the question of whose interests companies should really be serving.

Where's the beef, Mr Brown?

Article Abstract:

The Labour party is starting to acknowledge the importance of a strong competition policy, recognising that lack of competition on the domestic market causes poor competitiveness abroad. However, the party still seems to want to retain certain elements of regulation, and its plans to legislate to prohibit specific practices may prove to be self-defeating. Its plans will only work if it can find a way to make workers more competitive.
