How Armenia won the war but lost the oil

Article Abstract:

Armenia has received large amounts of US aid, and this has played a key role in allowing it to gain a military victory over neighbouring Azerbaijan. The two countries have been operating a ceasefire since 1995 over the mountain enclave of Nagorny-Karabakh. However, Armenia is beginning to feel increasingly isolated, especially as the US seems to be taking great interest in Azerbaijan's oil reserves. Leading US oil concerns hold 40% of the BP-led consortium which is developing Azerbaijan's oil resources, and Azeri President Haidar Aliyev is soon to visit the US.

Georgia fears a return of the assassins from Russia

Article Abstract:

Relations between Georgia and Russia, which have always fluctuated, are becoming increasingly tense as Georgians claim that the Russians are trying to assassinate President Eduard Shevardnadze. He has no obvious successor, and there would be a dangerous power vacuum in the Caucasus if he were to be assassinated. Georgians believe that Russia is attempting to create a situation of controlled chaos in their country, thus making it possible to maintain its influence.
