Back to school

Article Abstract:

Staff and students at Thurston Senior High School in Spingfield, OR, are still struggling to come to terms with the fact that Kip Kinkel, a student at the school, shot his parents dead at home and killed two fellow students in May 1998. They have received counselling, but it is still very hard for them to understand why Kinkel, who was intelligent and from a loving family, should have been driven to murder. School principal Larry Bentz believes that additional security measures would have a negative impact.

No school - what a result

Article Abstract:

The first children to be educated at home as part of the UK's Education Otherwise organization are now in their 20s and 30s. Research based on the experiences of 20 of them indicates that they have established themselves successfully in the adult world. All have some occupation, including looking after young children, being self-employed and studying. However, one in three believe that home education would only be an option for their children if school proved unsatisfactory.
