'How can we have hope while Mladic lives?'(General Ratko Mladic; army commander Bosnia-Herzegovina; includes related article)
Article Abstract:
Some 6,000 women meeting at a stadium in northern Bosnia-Herzegovina on July 11 1996 to commemorate the destruction of their home town of Srebrenica and the killing of their menfolk called for General Ratko Mladic to be brought to justice. Such women find it difficult to focus on the living too, which the event was meant to encourage them to do, particularly as bodies are currently being dug out of mass graves in the area. Some of the women described how their husbands were taken away in a bus or marched away, never to be seen again.

A blundering Russian army ignores history
Article Abstract:
Russian military intervention in the rebel republic of Chechnya has been characterised by tactical incompetence. Russian armed forces appear to be oblivious to the lessons of their own military history, and are continuing to make very basic errors. A power struggle within the military has destroyed basic principles of organisation, and some aspects of the intervention are almost completely out of control. The chaos also reflects the conflict between various organs of the Russian government.

What happened to the glorious Red Army?
Article Abstract:
The Russian army which captured Berlin in 1945 has held in great respect, being seen as a highly professional fighting force. It had extremely talented tactical commanders, and its soldiers were extremely disciplined. This contrasts greatly with the Russian army which is currently engaged in the conflict in Chechnya. It uses young, badly trained conscripts, many of whom consume large quantities of alcohol or drugs.
