How employment can boom without busting the economy

Article Abstract:

Latest statistics indicate that there has been a genuine fall in unemployment in the UK. This has even reached the stage of skills shortages, and employers are beginning to be concerned abut pressure on salaries. Economists and politicians generally feel that 'supply side' measures should be used to cut unemployment, and that there are dangers associated with allowing the economy to expand too rapidly. However, some observers feel that there is ample scope for additional demand to reduce unemployment.

Voters should be thankful for the fiscal vigilantes

Article Abstract:

The level of national debt in the UK, which has doubled under John Major's government, is significant in a number of different ways. In particular, high national debt has the effect of reducing public confidence in the government. This has prompted politicians, especially chancellor Kenneth Clarke, to emphasise that the medium-term aim is to produce a balanced budget. This raises the question of how politicians will actually put fiscal prudence into practice.

A harsh verdict from the fiscal vigilantes

Article Abstract:

The Spanish government remains determined that the country's economy will be healthy enough to join a European monetary union before the 1999 deadline. However, international investors believe that the Spanish economy will now never be among the strongest in a united Europe. They point out that Spain still has serious problems with high unemployment, above-average inflation, a large government budget deficit and a high level of existing government debt.
