IRELAND: LIFTING OF CURBS WILL BENEFIT MULTIPLES

Article Abstract:

Legislation that restricts superstore size in Ireland may be lifted following a Government examination, a move that may result in large UK-based retailers entering the Republic. Ireland is the fastest-growing retail market in Europe, and big-name retailers such as Asda, B&Q and Sainsbury's would help increase competition and boost Ireland's sales growth further. Under the current rules, newly built grocery stores must not exceed 3,000 square metres outside Dublin, or 3,5000 square metres within the capital. Restriction for all non-food stores is 6,000 square metres.

US: IBM CREATES SYSTEM TO MONITOR SHOPPERS

Article Abstract:

International Business Machines (IBM) has developed a new computer system which is able to track the behaviour of individual shoppers in an effort to discover the reasons for purchasing or not purchasing items. The Footprints system includes a network of heat sensors which monitors the time taken at each point in the store, with the resultant information being used by store managers to understand why some products are less popular than others. Initial trials will be carried out in a US supermarket and there is interest too from an unnamed chain in the UK.
