Iceland sweats as volcano burns away Europe's biggest glacier
Article Abstract:
There may be extensive flooding along Iceland's south coast as a result of the continuing eruption of the Loki volcano. This is situated beneath the largest glacier in Europe, and the eruption has therefore melted large volumes of ice. It is possible that a rapidly-moving column of water will be released, causing much more damage than an ordinary volcanic eruption. Local residents are already making preparations to ensure that the damage is restricted as much as possible.

The year of living uncertainly
Article Abstract:
There have been a number of significant scientific developments in 1996. These include detailed inter-disciplinary research work which indicates that there is life on Mars. This has in turn attracted related research work attempting to prove or disprove this theory. Scientists have also been looking closely at the possible links between Creuztfeldt-Jakob Disease and BSE and at ways of detecting possible meteorite impacts.

The great European space scandal
Article Abstract:
Space vehicle experts in Europe believe that developing a small, reusable spaceplane would be an extremely successful commercial venture. However, the European Space Agency (ESA) has no plans to test any sort of reusable space launcher for at least another 15-20 years. This contrasts strongly with the situation in the US, where Nasa plans a new generation of spacecraft to replace the space shuttle fleet.
