'If she goes, Musa's youth will be snuffed out.' (continued controversy over illegal marriage of 13-year-old British girl to 18-year-old Turk)

Article Abstract:

The case of Sarah Cook, a 13-year-old British girl who has undergone an underage 'marriage' to an 18-year-old Turk, Musa Komeagac, whom she met while on holiday in Turkey, has attracted considerable controversy. Sarah's parents have been ordered by authorities in the UK to bring her back within two weeks. Musa's family fear that if this happens, he could face up to six years in jail. He is currently in custody on charges of underage sex.

Rudderless Tajikistan heads for the rocks

Article Abstract:

Russians, Uzbeks and Tajiks are leaving Tajikistanbecause they are afraid of Islamic intolerance. President Rakhom Nabijev is a figurehead with an opposition alliance government of the Islamic Renaissance Party and others. Many areas do not respond to central government or contribute to the budget. The five million Soviet-educated, Persian-speaking Tajiks hope for a new constitution at the Dec 1992 elections but civil war is feared.

Hijacked ship creeps towards Istanbul

Article Abstract:

A group of pro-Chechen gunmen continues to hold hostages on the 'Avrasya,' a Black Sea ferry which was captured in the port of Trabzon. They have threatened to blow up the ferry in Istanbul's Bosphorus strait if Russian troops do not stop attacking the Dagestan village where Chechen rebels are holding hostages. However, there are now indications that the hostages could be released.
