Article Abstract:
Newspapers have always had columns written by right-wing academics, but these have until recently been confined to the books page. Now, these academics are starting to be published very widely in all sections of newspapers. Some observers believe that they are doing this simply to earn money, especially as earnings from academic work tend to be very modest. However, the trend has more complicated roots than this. Their numbers are limited, and they seem to form a coherent group with a common agenda.

A voice that launched 1,000 posters
Article Abstract:
The case of opera singer Roberto Alagna clearly highlights the importance of promoting the storyline of celebrities' lives. He had a very modest upbringing in Paris, France, and had no formal training. His first wife died of a brain tumour, and he later married a Romanian soprano who left her husband and two children. He has been the subject of an intensive image-building campaign, an approach which is still relatively unusual in classical music.

When glamour is beyond parody
Article Abstract:
Celebrities have for many years been a type of commodity, being created and disposed of at will by the media. In this way, they differ from heroes, who create themselves. Celebrities tend to be closely identified with ordinary people, as there is a strong danger that they will foster great envy if this is not the case. They have achieved nothing in particular, unlike heroes, and are neither good nor bad.
