In debt and crisis

Article Abstract:

The city of Washington, DC, is the centre of power in the US and has some of the country's most attractive buildings. However, the District of Columbia as a whole is facing racial tension, political stalemate and financial crisis. Recent problems have included public schools which are structurally dangerous, lack of funds for police car repairs and a shortage of spare parts for snow ploughs. In the poorest parts of the city, the infant mortality rate is higher than in most Third World countries, and a third of its population is on welfare.

Saint or sinner?

Article Abstract:

Hillary Clinton has gained a reputation for being extremely tough. This quality is increasingly important as she faces mounting criticism. She is now to give evidence before a grand jury, the first time that a president's wife has had to do so, and is likely to find this very challenging, despite her legal experience. She insists that she is guilty of nothing, but will inevitably be the subject of controversy.

Oklahoma's shock, America's revenge

Article Abstract:

The recent bomb attack in Oklahoma City may well permanently change views in the US about the country's vulnerability to international terrorism. Americans can no longer afford to be naive about terrorism, believing that it only happens elsewhere. They have already had to come to terms with a very high crime rate and many murders, and must now accept that they are no longer immune to terrorism either.
