In mourning for a lost limb

Article Abstract:

Children who lose limbs in accidents, or have to have amputation, need their parents' support and optimism. However, parents suffer psychological trauma and grieve for the loss of health. Children are more resilient and confront adversity less reluctantly than adults. Leigh-Ann Johns, 9, was injured by a joyrider in Cleveland, England, and had to have both legs amputated above the knee. This is the hardest level of amputation, as walking requires a lot of energy. Rehabilitation specialists believe serious physical injury is better than brain damage as the child has employment prospects.

More pleasure, more babies

Article Abstract:

Scientists already agree that the strong muscular contractions which the female orgasm produces can allow sperm to reach the fallopian tubes, where eggs are fertilised, much faster than would be the case if no orgasm took place. Latest research has taken this one step further, indicating that the lack of an orgasm may reduce the chances of a woman conceiving. This indicates that couples experiencing problems with conceiving may need to be given more help to ensure that the woman achieves orgasm.

Special deliveries that come swaddled in bubblewrap

Article Abstract:

There are 52,500 premature births a year in the UK, a rate which has not declined over the last two decades. Around 2,500 babies weigh less than 2 lb, and must be nursed in long-term intensive care conditions in special units. Prematurity is still the major cause of infant death, and accounts for around 1,800 deaths every year. Research is now focusing on infection as a key factor in premature labour.
