In the name of the Father and the Holy Vote

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has managed to gain a moral advantage over the Conservative party by forging an unofficial alliance with the Catholic church. Conservative party leader William Hague recognizes that the party must now move away from the individualism promoted by former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and present new-style Conservatism as community-minded and caring. It is clear that New Labour policy is already firmly linked with the social principles of the Catholic church, and this presents significant challenges for the Conservative party.

Father figure with the common touch

Article Abstract:

Right Rev George Carey, Archbishop of Canterbury and Primate of All england, is regarded by some observers as being too concerned with impressions. However, he is actually more complex than many people realize. He has pastoral breadth, and is more liberal than is widely assumed. He is gaining in authority, and has developed a clear, consistent line on issues such as unemployment and morality. He has shown an ability to relate to people in less sophisticated cultures, and has been genuinely trying to listen to people in the third world.
