Industry opinion
Article Abstract:
The U.K.'s public house and brewery trade expects sales of beer and spirits to remain steady, with most players agreeing that food availability is an important element of their overall strategy. There is a trend away from targeting younger adults and towards a broader range of customers. Most groups agree that an outlet's location is the key to its success, while speed of service is another important issue. It is forecast that the public house retail market will rise, at current prices, from 19.6 billion pounds sterling in 1996 to 24.5 billion pounds sterling by 2000.

Executive summary: the pub - phoenix or dinosaur?
Article Abstract:
Since 1990, the British pub retailing market has undergone a period of dramatic change, with around 2,500 pubs closing and a decline in on-trade demand. However, the industry has traditionally been resilient and retailers are expected to alter their marketing strategy in order to survive. There is a trend towards falling sales of alcoholic drinks in most pubs, while good-quality food and service are increasingly important sales strategies.

Advertising
Article Abstract:
Most advertising expenditure in the U.K. alcoholic drinks industry is spent on promoting brands, with few drinks companies advertising their outlets. Advertising of brewery products for the year ending Sep, 1995, totalled 107.2 million pounds sterling, compared with outlet advertising expenditure of just 6.9 million pounds sterling for the same period. Most outlet advertising is carried out locally.
