Industry scheme falls flat
Article Abstract:
Only 10 companies used the Training Outside Public Practice (Topp) scheme launched by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in July 1990. An institute survey found that cost was a major reason for companies not establishing a Topp programme. Training in industry was considered suitable for chartered accountants by 64% of companies and more relevant to business by 77%. Lack of marketing could be a reason for non-take-up.

Finance directors keep their heads above water
Article Abstract:
A study by consultants InterExec from 1989-1992 shows a stable demand level for finance directors although there are few posts for accountants in general. People headhunted are likely to work for one of the top 500 companies or appear in the press and speak at trade seminars. Search firms agree employee specifications with clients. Some feel it prevents other candidates from having the opportunity to widen experience.

Why trust someone else to do your tax returns?
Article Abstract:
It had become quite common at the beginning of the 1990s for UK companies to outsource some or all of their accounting work. This trend is now experiencing a revival, with recent research indicating that 90% of large companies have considered outsourcing, most at board level. Outsourcing has been shown to bring certain advantages, particularly in giving managers more time to focus on issues of business strategy.
