Inside the Assisi basilica, a sight to make saints weep

Article Abstract:

Art researchers have made brave attempts to piece together fragments of Cimabue's 'Four Evangelists' and 'The Doctors of the Latin Church,' which is attributed to Giotto or his school. These masterpieces were damaged during the earthquake which almost destroyed the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, Italy. However, they have had little or no assistance from the Italian government, and face great technical difficulties, including the possibility of further earthquakes. Nobody knows the extent of damage to the fresco cycle of the life of St Francis, also by Giotto or his school.

Umbria shows the civilised way to cope with calamity

Article Abstract:

The series of earthquakes which hit the Umbria region of Italy was relatively mild compared with other earthquakes which Italy has experienced. However, there has been serious damage to property in a few areas. In the town of Annifo, Italy, for example, many homes have been rendered uninhabitable, and around 250 people are now living in government-issue tents. It will be several years before everyone is rehoused, and some hill-top communities may be abandoned altogether.
