Internet police are reading you
Article Abstract:
There has only been limited censorship of material on the Internet so far. However, recent developments threaten to prompt a trent towards extensive censorship. Commercial network CompuServe has decided to cut off customers' access to more than 200 newsgroups, while right-wing elements in the US government recently managed to insert a clause in the new Telecommunications Bill which makes it unlawful to publish indecent material over computer networks. Censorship on the Internet raises issues which do not apply to the censorship of more traditional material such as books.

The net effect is confusion
Article Abstract:
It is certainly true to state that there is extremely explicit pornographic material available on the Internet. However, the media has greatly exaggerated the potential impact of such material on children. The hysteria surrounding pornography on the Internet has overshadowed the fact that children have much easier access to drugs and cigarettes, which have damaged more lives than computers ever will. It is the job of adults to ensure that their children do not have access to this material, as it is impossible to prevent it being placed on the Internet.

On 22 August Sharon Lopatka set out to look for someone to kill her. So she posted an Internet message to the discussion group alt.sex.necrophilia: 'Want to talk about torturing to death?'
Article Abstract:
A charge of murder has been brought against Robert Glass, who replied to a message left at an Internet discussion group by Sharon Lopatka regarding torturing people to death. The messages left on her hard disk at her home led police easily to Glass, and her body was quickly found. The case has led some people to raise concerns about Internet discussion groups, especially those which seem to blur the boundaries between reality and fantasy.
