Ireland: there is a solution

Article Abstract:

The UK and Irish governments have put together a document which they hope can serve as the basis for future negotiations in the Stormont multi-party talks on a peace settlement for Northern Ireland. Under the proposed arrangements, an intergovernmental council would bring together representatives from Scotland, Wales, London, Belfast and Dublin. There would be a new assembly in Belfast with extensive devolved powers, and there would be measures to address issues relating to security, arms decommissioning and policing.

'The last time I saw this man he was throwing grenades and shooting a pistol at us. Today he meets the Secretary of State.' (United Kingdom Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Mo Mowlam to meet four Ulster Defence Association prisoners)

Article Abstract:

UK Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Mo Mowlam is to meet four Ulster Defence Association (UDA) prisoners in the Maze prison in Northern Ireland. This move could prove a key step in ensuring that loyalists continue to respect a ceasefire. The UDA and the IRA are both keen to emphasize that their prisoners do not, as has been reported, live in luxury in the Maze prison. There seems to be a considerable amount of freedom for prisoners, but they are subject to the basic rules of prison life.
