Island of intrigue feels chill as spies pull out
Article Abstract:
The 115 islands in the Seychelles are espionage centres. It is common knowledge that President Albert Rene has phones tapped and spies everywhere to ensure support. The Seychelles sell South African arms, helped break oil sanctions against South Africa and permitted Mario Ricci, an Italian diplomat, to launder Mafia drug money. Mr Ricci opened theSeychelles International Bank and the Seychelles Trust Company, the only private offshore business registration company in the world. An American satellite tracking station attracted the Russians and Mr Rene encouraged a Cold War situation.

Two traditions, a singular tragedy
Article Abstract:
Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda, life president of Malawi, is aged around 95 but no provision has been made for his succession and a battle for power is likely when he dies. The economy is poor, there has been an influx of immigrants and Britain has stopped aid. He came to power during battles over the federation of Nyasaland with what is now Zimbabwe and Zambia, eventually breaking the federation. He was praised for this and has been at the pinnacle of power ever since. The way he favoured whites and sacked his supporters was really an act of betrayal.

A troubled world primed to explode
Article Abstract:
Many world political leaders are in very unstable positions at the moment, and differences between political parties are becoming increasingly blurred as voters in most countries realise that policies are very similar. Money and trade are becoming much more powerful forces than politics, and no national regulation can now control global trends. These developments are casting a shadow over the traditional concept of state sovereignty.
