Israel nibbles at compromise

Article Abstract:

The Israeli-Palestinian peace talks in Washington have reached agreement on verbal compromises. The West Bank and Gaza are now called the POT (Palestinian Occupied Territories) by the Palestinians and the Israelis refer to them as 'the territories' instead of Judea and Samaria. In November the Israelis presented their own version of West Bank land under Israeli control. They refer to 'double territoriality' and overlapping jurisdictions. They are prepared to consider partial withdrawal but Jerusalem is not discussed.

Kosovo crisis comes to life on the stage

Article Abstract:

The National Theatre in Pristina, Yugoslavia, is mainly run by Serbs, while ethnic Albanians are involved as actors and in technical roles. At a recent performance of Gogol's 'The Government Inspector,' the audience were all Serbs, as were the actors. The Albanian actors are staging Chekhov's 'Uncle Vanya,' with the dual productions being a clear reflection of the fact that art does not necessarily cross cultural barriers. Albanian actors have not been permitted to perform Albanian plays.

We love John and Jill - at least for now

Article Abstract:

Hostages such as John McCarthy and his girlfriend Jill Morrell lost their privacy on return to normal life. Any publicity and books published about them describe problems and immoral aspects of their behaviour, and ignore their good points. Hostages symbolise hope and despair; although their courage is admirable, people hope they have characters as flawed as their own.
