Article Abstract:
Winfried Hoffmann, 49, is head of the German computer manufacturer Aquarius Systems International (ASI) and has proved wrong the supposition that manufacturing in high-wage Germany could not compete with the Far East and its cheap labour. Personal computers are likened to vegetables in that they have a very short shelf life and price fluctuations demand that they are made and sold very quickly. When buying from the Far East, the machines take eight weeks in transportation and during this time prices can change by much more than the difference in labour costs. ASI has had a small profit of 5 million marks in a bad market and expects to achieve 750 million this year.

The survival of the Lloyd's insurance market will depend on the success of its new venture, Equitas, according to chairman-designate David Newbigging. Under the new scheme, all links between Lloyd's and its pre-1993 insurance policies will be cut, allowing the 'new Lloyd's' to begin trading profitably. Equitas will be an extremely large reinsurance company, dealing with all the old policies which are causing so many problems.

Paying off the 9 billion pounds sterling losses of the Lloyd's insurance market will bring financial ruin for some of its names, the investors who contributed to it. Lloyd's had been traditionally regarded as a safe investment, and the element of unlimited liability was not really taken seriously. Its collapse has dramatically highlighted the potential dangers of financial market involvement.
