It will strike at any time. It may have struck already. Invisible, indestructible, indescribably violent. And even if you're the most powerful nation on earth, all you can do is sit and wait for it, or run for cover. This is the neverending story of the hurricane

Article Abstract:

Many residents of towns and cities on the Atlantic seaboard of the US have fled ahead of Hurricane Floyd, which is forecast to hit the region shortly. This hurricane is 200 miles across, and could cause very extensive damage. Latest technology makes it possible to predict many aspects of a hurricane's behaviour, but forecasters can never know exactly where a hurricane will hit, as it can change direction unexpectedly. Officials who have remained behind have put emergency plans into practice, and now have nothing left to do but wait to see where the hurricane will hit.

Is America facing a rocky ride towards protectionism?

Article Abstract:

The US government has begun imposing import restrictions, and there is growing backing for more extensive action on trade. The US trade deficit is rising rapidly, and companies in key industries are shedding staff. The right wing of US politics is becoming more and more anti-trade, anti-foreigner and anti-global. The mainstream candidates for the Presidential election support free trade, but several conservative Republican candidates believe that China should not be allowed to join the World Trade Organization.

Death is not a lifestyle

Article Abstract:

Many consumer goods have been produced to mark the centenary of the birth of writer Ernest Hemingway. These include furniture, fountain pens and 'The Hemingway Cookbook.' It appears that Hemingway has now become a lifestyle, rather than merely a writer. This is ironic, given that Hemingway was always suspicious of commercialization. The items commemorating his centenary fail to reflect his obsession with death.
