It's a hard Act to follow through
Article Abstract:
The Disability Discrimination Bill, due to come into force as an Act in spring 1996, will make it illegal for companies which employ 20 or more people to discriminate against the disabled in areas including recruitment, employment and dismissal. Employers will be able to claim that there are good reasons for treating the disabled less favourably than others, but they will be obliged to adjust their arrangements or buildings in order to make them appropriate for use by the disabled. Some observers are expressing concern about various aspects of the new regulations, especially the definition of disabled.

Time to take care of business
Article Abstract:
A report by international consultancy firm Huthwaite found that middle-ranking accountancy firms in the UK do not emphasise business skills sufficiently. Staff with a lively personality have been sought, but clients need people who can add value to a deal. The partnership culture does not lend itself to the evolution of entrepreneurial skills. The most successful firms involve non-partners in strategic development and organise activities to exploit business opportunities.

Fancy being our man in China?
Article Abstract:
A survey of executives from 36 UK firms working overseas, conducted by Nick Forster, from Cardiff Business School, indicates that firms beginning to operate in countries such as China need to be prepared for impediments and unanticipated occurrences and a lot of stress. Staff working overseas should develop good relations with people able to assist them, including bureaucrats. Companies tend not to plan for the future, thinking only of the short term.
