It's all make-believe
Article Abstract:
The UK has a long history of strong interest in inventing, but inventors have rarely been able to find commercial success, mainly because they tend to take only a short-term financial view and lack commitment to manufacturing. Inventors have traditionally been viewed as eccentric, and commercial organisations generally do not take them seriously. However, this situation is now beginning to change. There have been a number of high-profile cases in which investors have achieved commercial success, and Richmond upon Thames College is even running a course for inventors.

The Empire talks back
Article Abstract:
There has been a strong reaction to moves by the UK's Foreign Office to suspend its triennial agreement with the BBC's World Service and to introduce funding cuts. To some observers, it is an anachronism now that the UK no longer has an empire, but others feel that it still has a vital role to play. It broadcasts in more than 40 languages to 133 million listeners, and now has a clear sense of mission.
