James McIntosh Patrick

Article Abstract:

Artist James McIntosh Patrick started drawing and etching while studying at Morgan Academy in Dundee, Scotland. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art, and began his working life as an etcher. However, he was forced to turn to oil painting when demand for etchings collapsed. He soon gained a strong reputation for the power and perception of his landscapes. He was commissioned into the Camouflage Corps during the second world war, and during this time developed a pen, ink and watercolour sketching technique.

He developed his own educational ideas while studying at the Courtauld Institute, London, England. He undertook research into child art, and this brought him into contact with Victor Pasmore. From 1954, he worked with Pasmore and Harry Thubron on a series of summer schools for teachers.
