Jewish solidarity split by cultural divisions

Article Abstract:

The split between secular and religious Jews in Israel is the key feature of the country's politics. Israeli Jews are very willing to unite against a common enemy, but there are still six identifiable sub-cultures in the country. There is almost no intermarriage between members of most of these subcultures, and each group has a clear territorial base and separate educational institutions. Further problems are created by the fact that the figure of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is deeply divisive.

We have seen the enemy and it is us

Article Abstract:

The assassination of Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin is likely to have a significant impact on Israeli politics for the rest of the 1990s. The incident showed that, contrary to the belief of the security forces, a Jew could present a threat to the life of the prime minister, and has highlighted deep divisions within Israeli society. The country's political agenda will now be determined by internal, rather than external, threats.

Second attack shatters the hopes of Peres

Article Abstract:

The recent suicide bomb attack in Jerusalem, the second in a very short time, has already had a serious political impact on Israeli prime minister Shimon Peres. Ordinary people now feel that too many sacrifices are being made for the peace process, and some are openly hostile towards Peres. There is a general feeling that Peres could and should do more, but nobody is really sure how the suicide bomb attacks can be stopped.
