Juror splits ranks over King verdict; Clinton puts Republicans on defensive

Article Abstract:

Los Angeles, America's second biggest city, suffered $1 billion dollars or 571 million pounds sterling of damage in the Rodney King aftermath riots. Deaths of 58 victims were mainly caused by gunshot inguries, indicating the large number of firearms in the city. Over $625,000 worth of goods have been recovered, some returned voluntarily. County jails were overcrowded with 26,000 prisoners and an emergency law was passed to extend the time offenders can be held without charge from 48 hours to one week, but this may still be insufficient. Virginia Loya, a 40-year-old housewife, one of the jurors on the Rodney King case, admitted she felt Mr King was assaulted but was pressurised by the other jurors.

City's new broom has Olympian task

Article Abstract:

The mayor of Los Angeles, Tom Bradley, organised a task force led by Peter Ueberroth, former baseball commissioner and organiser of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, to clear up riot damage. The cost will be about $1 billion, or 560 million pounds sterling. Volunteers of all races began cleaning up debris and organising food distribution. A march of about 30,000 people through Koreatown called for peace and compensation for 800 Korean businesses. Although Los Angeles is a federal disaster area and businesses may apply for loans at 4% interest, it will be difficult to persuade investors of the value of supporting South-Central Los Angeles.

Koresh denied cult children safe refuge

Article Abstract:

Cult messiah David Koresh intended the child members of the cult to die as he could have sent them to the underground shelter found by the FBI after the fire which killed 86 followers. The FBI face questions after they gassed the Waco, Texas, TX, compound to end the siege begun on Feb 28, 1993. Survivors deny any suggestions of suicide, but the FBI has aerial photographs of multiple fires. The fire brigade was held up at an FBI checkpoint for about 20 minutes, by which time it was too late.
