Karachi gripped by gang warfare

Article Abstract:

There has been fierce fighting between rival gangs in Karachi, Pakistan, with more than 230 people having been killed since the last week of May 1998. The main antagonists are all mohajir, Muslims who migrated from India to Pakistan at the time of partition and now form the largest ethnic group in Karachi. Their main political force, Mohajir Qaumi Movement, is in conflict with a breakaway faction, MQM-Haqiqi, and with a new breakaway group, Basic Association for the Citizens of Karachi.

The new gold rush - and how to join it

Article Abstract:

It has become relatively common over recent years for ordinary men and women to pioneer a business venture which has made them extremely rich very quickly. This is partly the result of globalisation, which means that an idea or invention can be marketed in many different countries and therefore has much greater profit potential than it would have had in the past. Areas which appear particularly lucrative include information technology, biotechnology and publishing.

Sorry, Britain is now closed

Article Abstract:

The UK government's new Asylum and Immigration Bill will make it even harder for people fleeing from oppressive regimes across the world to gain the right to remain permanently in the UK. This comes at a time when almost 80% of asylum-seekers are already refused refugee status and when there are more genuine refugees than ever before. Taking this line will inevitably mean that asylum-seekers are sent back to countries where they are likely to be killed.
