Keep the flag flying for our past glories

Article Abstract:

Nationalism has a key role to play in sport, even though it is sometimes associated with negative factors, such as football hooliganism. Sport allows countries to compete against each other in a controlled environment and brings nations together in a unified celebration of achievement. The UK government's decision to create a 100 million pounds sterling academy of sporting excellence is probably misguided, as funds will be spread too thinly, but it is important that the UK recognizes its sporting achievements of the past in this way.

The ad man's new pitch

Article Abstract:

Sport has become a very dominant theme in advertising. Advertisers now use sports themes and sports personalities to sell almost any kind of product, even if that product has no apparent links with sport. Sports stars are very attractive to advertisers, as they are generally young and good-looking with no specific cultural attachments. It has now become almost essential to make references to sport and sports stars if an impression of youth and vitality is to be conveyed.

Winners at losing, hands down

Article Abstract:

Some observers believe that Britons actually like losing at sport. They give considerable attention to losing teams, and are particularly attracted to heroic defiance. Other observers believe that this is not the case at all, arguing that the UK has become a poorer country since it began regularly losing at many sports. They feel that Britons yearn for winners and are greatly saddened by the fact that the UK lacks real sporting talent.
