Taking from Desmond Pitcher and giving to Poplar Joe: Labour's big idea?

Article Abstract:

The UK Labour party has announced plans to levy a windfall tax on some privatised companies in order to fund schemes to help 250,000 unemployed young people. This approach has been criticised by the Conservative party, which has pointed out that Labour's list of the companies to which the tax may apply is optional. It has also emphasised that unemployment has fallen by almost 1 million since its peak in Dec 1992, and has expressed the view that the Labour party would put the UK's future at risk.

Months early, and they're off: MAjor and Blair trade election blows on tax

Article Abstract:

Tax has already become a key issue in the very early stages of the campaigning for the 1997 general election in the UK. The Conservative party is determined to portray the Labour party as the party of high taxation and spending, and has accused Labour of planning to add 10p in the pound to the tax bill of those on the lowest salaries. Labour has emphasised that its long-term aim is to reduce high marginal tax rates for low-income families.
