Lessons from a violent death

Article Abstract:

It is very important to carefully consider the state of the UK's inner-city schools in the light of the recent fatal stabbing of Philip Lawrence, headteacher of St. George's Catholic School in Westminster, London. Teachers in poorer parts of London have for many years exposed themselves to violent situations as they have tried to deal with conflicts between pupils, and have demonstrated great courage. It is vital that schools continue to take a very strong line about right and wrong, as in many cases they provide the only stable point of reference for pupils from backgrounds where violence is common.

Teachers are the best job advert

Article Abstract:

The UK government has run a high-profile television and cinema advertising campaign aimed at recruiting more teachers, but some observers believe that this is a misguided approach. Research undertaken by the education department of Loughborough University, England, indicates that the government should switch to more imaginative schemes in which practising teachers offer advice and where potential recruits are involved directly in school experience. The government should be aware that using teachers as recruiters has always been the best way of attracting new teachers.

Is selection good for the kids?

Article Abstract:

There seem to be strong moves among both Conservative and Labour politicians in the UK to undermine the status of comprehensive schools and to return to a system of selective education. Some observers view this negatively, feeling that it could create damaging social divisions, with some pupils being rejected as under-achievers. Others welcome this move, believing that mixed-ability teaching has a negative impact on the most able pupils.
