Lessons from the university of life

Article Abstract:

A partnership between Leeds Metropolitan University and the Castleford Women's Centre is allowing miners' wives to study at degree level. The bachelor of arts honours course has attracted more than 60 students, while a wide range of other classes are also available. The centre was established by two women who met in the soup kitchens of the 1984 miners' strike, and they have used a lot of the experience the gained during that time in areas such as fund raising and public speaking.

University must cut 1m pounds sterling to avert financial crisis

Article Abstract:

The University of Essex must make savings exceeding 1 million pounds sterling if it is to avoid a financial deficit. The University Council is now to look at how forecast deficits for the next three years can be handled, and has already said that no 'significant' new schemes will be allowed to go ahead. Like many other universities, it has suffered from constant cuts in its funding, reduced predictions of growth in student numbers and a fall in research grant income.
