Let's keep the Government out of it
Article Abstract:
Government involvement in agriculture in the UK is still widely accepted, even though other industries have become autonomous. This means that the producer is unable to take responsibility for the quality of the product, and that food products are heavily subsidised. Making the industry independent of the government would bring considerable advantages, including improving efficiency and reducing production costs. A properly-run beef industry, for example, would be in a strong position to deal effectively with the current concerns of consumers about the possible health risks of eating beef.

Bring back the wolf, for a forest to last a thousand years
Article Abstract:
The majority of the projects which are being planned in the UK to mark the millennium have very little long-term significance. It seems that society as a whole has become unaccustomed to thinking a long way ahead. Those planning millennium schemes should look to the example of Trees for Life, a project in Scotland which aims to recreate large areas of native forest. This scheme requires great vision, as the forested areas would take several hundred years to become established. In the long term, it may also be possible to reintroduce large mammals such as bears and wolves.

Tough on the philosophy of crime
Article Abstract:
There are signs that the crime rate in the US is falling, and this trend could well emerge in other developed countries. Already, crimes in England and Wales have fallen for the past 18 months, and the crime rate in 1994 was 5% lower than in 1983. There has been a particular fall in some of the crimes which attract most public attention, notably burglary and car crime. New technology, such as video surveillance, has helped to reduce the levels of some crimes, while it is also possible that a new emphasis on civic behaviour and moral responsibility has helped.
