Let's stay chummy, Chomsky

Article Abstract:

Noam Chomsky has gained a very strong reputation as a radical intellectual, challenging the influence of elite power and illegitimate authority. He has become particularly influential among supporters of the counter-culture, especially young Americans. However, his puritan empiricism does not seem particularly appropriate when he considers popular culture. Furthermore, his analysis of the impact of the media on the masses may be clouded by his extremely rationalist mind-set. He may have to change his views on the influence of popular culture if he is to retain his leading position.

Saint of the superhighway

Article Abstract:

There has recently been a revival in interest in the views of media guru Marshall McLuhan, who was extremely popular in the 1960s. He had a great ability to summarise all aspects of the media society, and this seems particularly appropriate as the era of digital television begins. Some of his views have not survived, but others are gaining new respect. Above all, McLuhan is respected for having been extremely prophetic about the knowledge-society.
