Lonely hearts need not apply

Article Abstract:

US concern Tele-Publishing Group, the largest telephone dating company in the world, is establishing a presence in the UK. The company wishes to raise the profile of telephone dating, but also wants to ensure that it has an up-market image. It uses human operators who help callers to write and record their advertisements, and halves charges to customers compared with other telephone dating services by making a premium-rate charge when someone listens to or replies to an advertisement. The company's own advertising is aimed at attracting young, dynamic customers.

Did cockroach spray kill little Claire?

Article Abstract:

It is likely that there is a link between pesticides and insecticides and the severe birth defect known as Charge syndrome, in which the foetus develops six major abnormalities. There is a particular danger of this condition if the exposure to pesticides or insecticides comes between the 35th and 45th days of pregnancy. The most dangerous chemical is thought to be permethrin, which is known to cause symptoms including breathing difficulties, nausea and skin irritations in some people exposed to it.

China's secret nuclear tests leave legacy of cancer and deformity

Article Abstract:

Evidence obtained in China's supposedly semi-autonomous province of Xinjiang indicates that cases of cancer and related diseases in areas close to sites where nuclear weapons have been secretly tested since the 1960s are up to 39% more common than in the rest of China. The research unearthed children and young people with extremely severe birth deformities and diseases. Doctors in the region have very few resources, and victims often receive almost no help at all.
