Article Abstract:

Keele University has sold the Turner Collection, which comprises significant early mathematics books and manuscripts purchased over many years by Charles Turner, for 1 million pounds sterling. The university had suffered a long period of budget restrictions, and needed to raise funds for library materials. The sale of the collection has been a controversial decision, with the university's ruling council going against a vote in the academic senate not to go ahead with the sale. It is likely that the collection will go to the US, where there is strong demand for early works.

Malaysia's crisis gives UK universities money malaise

Article Abstract:

The financial crisis in south east Asia is causing serious problems for UK universities, which rely heavily in income from students from this region. UK universities have become particularly dependent on income from Malaysian students, which is now worth more than 100 million pounds sterling. This problem will be most acute for those universities that have made very strong efforts to attract students from south east Asia. At The London Institute, for example, south east Asia and Japan account for 8 million pounds sterling of overall funding of 60 million pounds sterling.

At last some Dearing-do

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom government has responded to a report by Ron Dearing on funding for higher education and has bravely accepted a proposal to charge tuition fees. More details are needed from the government on how its proposals will work. It is unclear how the new system will be introduced and who it will affect. A proposed fee of 1,000 pounds sterling is planned, and it is not clear how universities will be paid this money and whether it will replace fees paid by local government.
