The Dow Jones will continue its current rise to 6,000, which will be followed by a crash in late May or early Jun 1996, according to Robin Griffiths, head of technical analysis at James Capel. This forecast is based on following patterns on charts to extract those with predictive significance. Charts are useful when the forecasts they provide fit in with fundamentals, but can be interpreted in a number of different ways.

Those involved in financial markets are often guilty of taking a rather short-term view, failing to give consideration to the unexpected factors which may cause a sharp reversal of the existing situation. There are number of shocks which could affect the world economic system in the medium term. These include a reversal in the pattern of strong and weak currencies, a collapse of US share prices, serious social tension in continental Europe and the break-up of the European Union.
